Spa, 2005

This piece was performed the Artisan hotel, part of the collaborative installation One Night

Stand.  This temporary space was an arrangement of chambers and halls undergoing renovation – the site of a future luxury hotel spa. My selected space was a large shower stall that I transformed into a mini spa. There, for one night only, I gave hand massages and manicures. Later, a professional esthetician gave eyebrow waxes to willing participants.  All was documented and open to the viewing public- a ritual usually enacted behind closed doors becoming an event in voyeurism.  A video features four of the female participants’ waxes, the speed is slowed down to draw out both the pleasure and the pain.
